The Brighton Maverick - The Complete Series - REVISED EDITION

A contemporary novel of love, life and adventure in Brighton's Lanes

As Rick Matthews sat shivering on the midnight train to Brighton three things dawned on him. He had a boyfriend who resembled a Hollywood celebrity and had the money to match. He lived in a penthouse apartment and had a walk-in closet the size of a designer boutique. And he was desperate to get as far away from his life as he could.

It was just a pity it had taken him two years to realise it. Beset with problems from his past, Rick had only intended to escape to the coast for a few days. Yet life has a funny way of throwing you a curved ball; and the one thing he had not counted on was meeting her.

Set in the heart of Brighton's Lanes, a chance meeting with a kindly old lady and her idiosyncratic neighbours soon draws Rick into a series of adventures that would not only prove impossible to resist, but would change his life forever.

Inspired by true events, Scott Chadwick's debut novel is a contemporary gay romance that’s charming, witty and full of intrigue; where no one is quite who they seem and where twists of fate lurk around every corner.

There's Maxwell Hart, shopkeeper and self-proclaimed Godfather of the Lanes; Barbara, his long suffering wife; Becky, Rick's best friend who's spent a lifetime pouring her energy into her business rather than any kind of romance; and the two Toms, a gay couple who've been together for years but have never managed to formally commit, to name but a few.

The Brighton Maverick is colourful, feel-good tale of friendship, of our need to support each other through whatever life throws at us, and of love, in no matter what form it happens to take.

The Brighton Maverick The complete series of love life and liaisons in Brighton Lanes REVISED EDITION edition by Scott Chadwick Literature Fiction eBooks

“The Brighton Maverick” unfolds unconventionally for better and, unfortunately, sometimes for worse.
If you download the preview you will quickly learn that the story is told in vignettes that pop around unexpectedly and then begin to stitch together. The story always moves forward, often in delightfully surprising ways. Mr. Chadwick/Lantsbury is a master at using the form to pull the rug out from under the reader time and again. That alone kept me plowing forward
However, buying the book based solely on the preview could frustrate readers of conventional m/m romances in a couple of ways. The biggest unexpected departure is that the book branches out widely from being the tale of Rick and how he finds love again, which is primarily the focus of the opening chapters. The book also follows Becky through her romantic foibles, and Grace’s reawakening, and a couple named Max and Barbara, and Tom, and Tomas, and Dionne and a half dozen others. It brings to mind a more widely cast, 21st-century version of Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City.”
“The Brighton Maverick” also lacks the usual bedroom scenes of m/m romance, which some readers might find a letdown (although I didn’t).
Oh yes, as always, I love reading a book with a strong sense of location, in this case Brighton on Britain’s southern coast. I always get a schooling in the idioms of language and locale.
However, two points make me love this book a lot less than I want to.
First, Mr. Chadwick/Lantsbury sorely needs an editor, or at least a proofreader. He suffers the ills of all self-published authors – the dropped word, the repeated word, the “too” instead of “to,” and so on. Every time I stumbled across another instance, I was torn away from the story.
Then there were a couple of plot turns that just aren’t grounded in real life (an editor would have helped here as well). For a book that tried to delight us with so many details of life among all these characters, the unreality of these points was a real letdown. **SPOILER ALERTS** The minor one, around the halfway point of the book, is that gay couples can’t marry in Las Vegas, at least not as of mid-2014. I’m sure there are wedding chapels that perform ceremonies, but they have no standing and that’s not the point of this plot device. The biggie is the resolution, or lack thereof, of an arson case at the book wraps up. Not in America and not in Britain would one escape charges when arson results in a death. No way.
If you can overlook these points, you’ll love “The Brighton Maverick.” If you can’t, like me, you’ll wish Mr. Chadwick/Lantsbury had polished this work once or twice more before unleashing it on the public.

A thoroughly enjoyable book. I was sorry to finish it, and I look forward to another from this author.
This is one of the better gay romance stories that I have read. It definitely holds your interest! I recommend it highly!
AAA+++
Loved the story but it did need editing. Some transitions for scenes were disjointed or didn't fit timeline. It really didn't detract from the story and is well worth the read.
I really enjoyed this book. It's light-hearted, it has a mystery & gay characters & my inner grammar nazi only winced occasionally. The most disappointing thing was the lack of anything else written by Scott.
I really couldn't put this down. If like me you know Brighton you will love this story, the quirky lifestyle of the area simply leaps off the pages. Although there are no explicitly written sex scenes you really feel the passions between the characters, you even expect the little of Champ to leap up and lick your face! A masterful piece of writing which you will really enjoy.
This was a light hearted romp around Brighton - a bit like a Jackie Collins, but without the salacious sex, set in The Lanes and other popular landmarks of the East Sussex coastal town. The story was quite fast paced, the characters are likable enough and makes for a lovely holiday read.
Rick (or the 'Maverick' of the title) is the pleasant, but sometimes annoyingly perfect, hero. The tales weave creatively around him, involving other interesting characters and their sagas too.
The book was well written in a casual manner - it felt light and not too involving though. Each chapter had a quirky title which added an extra element for me somehow. The conclusion is not one that is fully anticipated, but neither is it completely satisying, it does not leave you hanging, yet there could have been more depth, emotion or realism.
If you are a fan of (or live in) Brighton or enjoy a casual non-taxing read with a spot of romance (both gay and straight) thrown in with a few twists and turns - then you actually will quite LOVE this story.
